Business Technology Program Fact Sheet


What is Business Technology?

The Business Technology program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students to provide administrative support within a variety of offices. Knowledge of clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology are covered in this program.

Tasks:

  • Prepare invoices, reports, memos, letters, financial statements, and other documents, using word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software.
  • Answer phone calls and direct calls to appropriate parties or take messages.
  • Conduct research, compile data, and prepare papers for consideration and presentation by executives, committees, and boards of directors.
  • Attend meetings to record minutes.
  • Greet visitors and determine whether they should be given access to specific individuals.

Prerequisite Courses
  1. Degree level proficiency required to take degree level General Education courses. Please refer to course descriptions in the online catalog for specific prerequisites.
  2. Diploma level proficiency required to take diploma level General Education courses.
  3. FYES 1000   (prerequisite for most BUSN courses)
  4. Students who do not type at least 25 words per minute will be advised to take BUSN 1100  their first semester.

  • FYES 1000  
  • ENGL 1101  
  • One course from General Education Area II and
  • One course from General Education Area III

Graduates of the program receive a Business Technology, associate of applied science degree and will have completed the general office assistant certificate and the Microsoft office applications professional certificate.

Note: Students that choose PSYC 1101 as their Area II elective could also complete the diploma in Business Technology.

Suggested First Classes for Diploma

Graduates of the Business Administrative Assistant concentration will have completed the diploma, General Office Assistant certificate and the Microsoft office Applications Professional certificate. Graduates of the Medical Administrative Assistant concentration will have completed the diploma, the Medical Office Assistant certificate and the Medical Billing Clerk certificate.

Note: Students completing the Medical Administrative Assistant concentration who choose BUSN 1240 as an elective could also complete the Administrative Support Assistant certificate.

Note: Students completing the Business Administrative Assistant concentration who choose BUSN 1420 as an elective could also complete the Microsoft Office Application Professional certificate.

Application Process Applicants to the Business Technology program must meet all Admission requirements: complete an application and pay the application fee. Individuals apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu, submit all transcripts from high school and previous college work, and take the ACCUPLACER test, if required.
