Medical Assisting Diploma Program Fact Sheet


What is a Medical Assistant? The Medical Assisting program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s healthcare industry. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of medical assisting. Graduates of the program received a Medical Assisting diploma and are eligible to take the national board exam for the Medical Assistant Certification. For more information visit aama.org.
Semester Program Begins Fall semester, Full time; Day classes only
Minimum Age Requirement 18 years of age at the start of program.
General Admission Application Process Apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu, submit all transcripts from high school and previous college work, and take the ACCUPLACER test, if required. Students must be accepted into Gwinnett Technical College prior to applying to a program of study. Students meeting admissions requirements will be placed into the Healthcare Assistant Certificate while completing the required prerequisite courses.
Program Application Process
  1. Apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu.
  2. Complete required program prerequisites with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  3. Complete the TEAS V (Test of Essential Academic Skills® Exam with a minimum score of 50%)
  4. Complete Medial Assisting application and submit by deadline.
  5. Attend mandatory Medical Assisting program orientation.

*Courses must be completed within five years of the competitive program file completion deadline.
Competitive Admissions
  1. Complete required program prerequisites with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

  3. Complete Medial Assisting application and submit by deadline.
  4. Attend mandatory Medical Assisting program orientation.
Program Costs and Requirements Supply fees; Uniforms, including nursing shoes and lab jacket; stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, CPR card, watch with second hand, GTC health science’s patch, school identification badge, books, possible criminal background check, drug testing, required immunizations (students must start the immunizations for Hepatitis B prior to the first day of classes for first semester), liability insurance, software that is required for various courses, USB flash drive, CMA (AAMA) certification exam cost, and the cost of transportation to and from the clinical practicum site. Additional materials may be required for specific courses.
Graduation Requirements Completion of all courses with a “C” or better. All medical assisting students are required to pass a comprehensive exit exam with a score of 70% or better or pass the CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam. The comprehensive exam is administered in MAST 1180 (Medical Assisting Seminar). the CMA (AAMA) examination must be taken prior to completion of MAST 1180.
