Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate Program Fact Sheet

What is Kitchen and Bath Design? Design the number 1 renovation area of the home as a Kitchen and Bath Design.  The Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate program has been granted support status by NKBA.  The Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate provides training for those who wish for entry level and advancement in positions in the kitchen and bath industry. The Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate includes knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for working in this specialized design area. Students will learn presentation standards, construction and mechanical systems, basics of kitchen and bath design, materials, lighting, universal and theme design applications, software technology and business practices. Industry internships are required in the kitchen and bath field to complete this program. The program emphasizes a combination of KBD theory and practical application necessary for successful employment and those seeking their certification in kitchen and bath design. Certified Kitchen Designers (CKD) and/or Certified Bath Designers (CBD) will qualify to take exam(s) following completion of this program and the required years of industry experience.  The kitchen and bath area of interior design is the # 1 growth area within the design field.

Prerequisite courses
  1. Diploma level proficiency in English and reading is required to take the INDS technical courses. Please refer to course descriptions in the online catalog for specific prerequisites.
  2. FYES 1000  
  3. Students must be 18 years of age to take the INDS 1175, Kitchen and Bath Internship.
Length of Program Certificate: 3 semesters minimum
37 semester hours
Semester Program Begins Fall, spring and summer terms.
Application Process Applicants to the Kitchen and Bath Design Program must meet all Admissions requirements; complete an application and pay the application fee. Apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu and submit all transcripts from high school and previous college work, and take the ACCUPLACER test if required.

The ASID State of the Industry shows that Interior Design has fully recovered to pre-recession levels.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census reflect an 11.9% growth in the number of Interior Designers, 6% growth in Design firms and 8 to 9% growth in the construction industry.  Interior Design is a strong growing sector.  It is complex, changing and accelerating as the building environment grows and changes.
