Program Description

The Cosmetology diploma is awarded after successfully completing a sequence of cosmetology courses and core courses that prepares students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, rules, and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, skin and nail care, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, math, reading, writing, interpersonal relations development, computer skills, employability skills, and work ethics. The completion of the program will allow for student application to be sent to the state approved testing facility. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. Program graduates will receive a cosmetology diploma and are employable as a cosmetology salesperson, cosmetologist, salon manager, or a salon owner. Successful completion of the program qualifies the student to participate in the State Cosmetology Board Examination which has the authority to grant a Master Operator’s License to a person passing both practical and written examinations. This program is only offered full-time, during the day.

Prior to admission into the cosmetology diploma program students must take the ACCUPLACER test and score at or above the diploma level in addition to Gwinnett Technical College admission requirements.

Graduation requirements

All cosmetology students are required to complete all essential general and technical core courses (ENGL 1010  or ENGL 1101 , MATH 1012  or MATH 1111 , PSYC 1010  or PSYC 1101 , FYES 1000 ). These courses must be completed to obtain the Cosmetology diploma.

Employment Opportunities

Professional stylist, hair designer, salon manager, receptionist, color technician, chemical texture technician, and product representative.
