Program Description

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Do you like to take things apart and figure out what makes them function? If so, Gwinnett Technical College’s Mechatronics Certificate program might be for you. Mechatronics combines the study of electrical, mechanical and computer software and how these technologies work together in order to improve and produce a process and/or product. Gwinnett Technical College has one of the few Mechatronics programs in Georgia, with an innovative, hands-on curriculum developed in conjunction with our ongoing association with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and their Knowledge Management System (KMS).  No previous experience is required, and you can earn your Mechatronics System Certification through our program, based at our new Technology Center, located on the Lawrenceville, Georgia Campus. The GTC faculty will be by your side during every step of the process, from enrollment, to academics and job placement, if necessary. We work hard to ensure your success.

Modern manufacturing product lines have taken full advantage of automation technologies, in order to reduce costs, increase production and improve quality control. Most of these companies employ extensive use of robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), hydraulic/pneumatic systems, and sophisticated electrical systems. Mechatronics technicians have a good grasp of these complex systems, allowing them to perform critical maintenance duties and necessary repairs. (Program length: 1 Semester)

Gwinnett Technical College’s Mechatronics Program offers the following three (3) levels of academic course-work, each level consisting of increasing credit hours and class time.

MT23 Mechatronics Technology, AAS degree
MDT2 Mechatronics Technology, diploma
MD21 MEchatronics Technolopgy certificate

The Mechatronics Certificate Program was created by GTC, in an effort to further the mission of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) by helping students to achieve educational and career goals while also meeting local and regional workforce needs. The program provides students an opportunity to gain college credit and explore a field, Mechatronics, that will be central to the growing manufacturing base in the Georgia area, as well as other more remote locations.  While all of our programs are designed to be a stand-alone entity, graduates of the Diploma and Certificate programs have the opportunity to continue studies toward the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) at Gwinnett Technical College.  Additionally, students who complete our AAS program have an opportunity to take advantage of an articulation agreement we have with Kennesaw State University, where students can ultimately earn a full Bachelor’s of Science degree.

Employment Opportunities

Mechatronics personnel, technicians, electricians, millwrights, and other related roles are charged with inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial and industrial mechanical and electrical systems. These systems are can be found in manufacturing applications, assembly lines, power systems and production facilities. The complex machinery found in each of these situations needs technicians to install, service, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair machinery and program operating systems, in order for the companies to maintain reduced operational problems and a high level of productivity.

Mechatronics is an enabling approach to technology that is increasingly applied in a number of economic sectors including: Biotechnology, Life Science & Medical; Electronics & Applied Computer Equipment; Telecommunications & Information Services; Distribution, Transportation & Logistics; Heavy & Special Trade Construction; Energy, Mining & Related Support Services; Petroleum Refining & Chemical; Transportation Equipment; Production Support & Industrial Machinery; Agriculture, Forestry & Food; Aerospace, Homeland Security and Defense.
