Program Description

The Automotive Technology diploma program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for careers in the automotive service and repair profession. Learning opportunities enable students to develop academic, technical and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes a combination of automotive mechanics theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. There is a demand for qualified trained technicians to service and repair today’s high-tech automobiles. Program graduates receive an Automotive Technology diploma that qualifies them as well rounded entry-level technicians.

Prerequisite: Students are encouraged to acquire a personal set of hand tools.

The Gwinnett Technical College General Automotive Training Program meets the master automobile technician training certification program level for the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, Inc. /Automotive Service Excellence (ASE-NATEF). Students may become certified by taking the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification tests administered in eight areas by ACT (American College Testing). This program is only offered full-time in the evenings.

Nissan Technician Training Academy (NTTA): Our General Automotive program is pleased to offer the Nissan Technician Training Academy (NTTA) program for prospective Nissan and Infiniti technicians. Students who want specialized training on Nissan and Infiniti vehicles may do so by enrolling in the General Automotive program at degree level and declaring this intention during orientation. These students will then train on Nissan and Infiniti vehicles during lab exercises utilizing Nissan-specific tools, equipment and technical information. Actual technician training credit for certain Nissan Technical Training courses may be earned by completing approved courses in the General Automotive program curriculum, as well.

Employment

Employment opportunities include but are not limited to a general automotive technician, basic automotive service technician, brake and front end specialist, air conditioning and electrical specialist, computer systems specialist, engine performance specialist, service advisor, service writer, and parts attendant.
