Game Development AAS Program Fact Sheet


What is Game Development?  The Game Development Degree is a sequence of courses designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and techniques required in the development of computer games. Program graduates are to be competent in the general areas of humanities or fine arts, social or behavioral sciences, and natural sciences or mathematics, as well as in the technical areas of computer terminology and concepts, program design and development, game design, gaming artificial intelligence, and gaming physics. Program graduates receive a Gaming Development Associate of Applied Science Degree.
Semester Program Begins Fall, spring, or summer semesters.
Application Process Applicants to the Game Development program must meet all admission requirements; complete an application and pay the application fee. Individuals apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu and submit all transcripts from high school and previous college work, and take the ACCUPLACER test, if required.
Program Prerequisites
  1. FYES 1000  
  2. CIST 1001  
  3. CIST 1305  
  4. Degree level proficiency required to take degree level General Education courses.
  5. Diploma level proficiency required to take CIST technical courses. Please refer to course descriptions in the online catalog for specific prerequisites.

Nature of the Work

Game Developers are the creative minds behind computer games. They develop video games, game levels, avatars, worlds, etc.

Work Environment

Many developers work for firms that deal in computer systems design and related services or for software publishers.

Employment

Employment of software developers is projected to grow 25 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations. The main reason for the rapid growth is a large increase in the demand for computer software.

Earnings

The median annual wage for software developers, applications was $127,260 in May 2022.
