CIST 2461 - Data Center I


Prerequisite: CIST 1130  
Corequisite: CIST 1001   and CIST 1122  
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to modern data center design, construction, and physical infrastructure with a strong emphasis on the build and deployment phase of data center development. Students explore data center architecture, facility components, and industry standards that guide the creation of reliable, scalable, and energy‑efficient environments. Core topics include site selection and layout, raised floor and containment strategies, structured cabling systems (copper and fiber), and rack installation best practices. Students examine electrical systems such as power distribution units (PDUs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), grounding and bonding, and high‑density power delivery for modern compute environments. The course also covers mechanical and environmental systems-including HVAC and CRAC/CRAH units, hot/cold aisle containment, airflow management, fire suppression systems, environmental monitoring, and sustainability considerations. Physical security concepts such as access control, surveillance, biometrics, and data center zoning are introduced to ensure compliance with modern security frameworks. Hands‑on activities include interpreting build documentation, reading equipment cut sheets, planning rack elevations, installing cable pathways, and evaluating environmental and electrical requirements for new build‑outs. The course prepares students for advanced data center operations coursework, infrastructure installation roles, technician positions, and entry‑level data center engineering support.
