Cosmetology Diploma Program Fact Sheet


What is Cosmetology? The Cosmetology Program is a sequence of courses designed to prepare students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention and advancement. At the completion of the program, the student will receive a cosmetology diploma and participate in the State Cosmetology Board Examination, which has the authority to grant a Master Operator’s license to a student who passes both written and practical examinations.

Sample of reported job titles: Professional stylist • Hair designer • Salon Manager • Receptionist • Color Technician • Chemical Texture Technician • Product Representative

Tasks:
  • Specialized training in safety and sanitation.
  • Specialized training in hair treatments and manipulations.
  • Specialized training in haircutting techniques, and skin and nail care.
  • Specialized training in receptionist skills, sales, and management.

Prerequisite Courses Diploma level proficiency in English, reading and math. Please refer to course descriptions in the online catalog for specific prerequisites.
Length of Program Diploma: 4 semesters

Application Process Applicants to the Cosmetology program must meet all Admission requirements; complete an application and pay the application fee. Individuals apply to Gwinnett Technical College at GwinnettTech.edu and submit all transcripts from high school and previous college work, and take the ACCUPLACER test, if required.
